TLS 1.2 is the most recent version of SSL/TLS.

It is newer than SSL 3.0, which is insecure and should never be used.

2017 TLS 1.3 Coming Soon
2008 TLS 1.2 Secure
2006 TLS 1.1 Legacy
1999 TLS 1.0
1996 SSL 3.0 Insecure
1995 SSL 2.0

How did this happen?

When SSL was standardized by the IETF in 1999, they changed the name to TLS and reset the version number to 1.0. Therefore, all versions of TLS are newer than any version of SSL.

The very first version of SSL/TLS, SSL 1.0, was never released publicly.
